Excellent (and rational) discussion on police use of force, well worth the read. The Talking Philosophy Blog is recommended for regular reading.
The cop was wearing a camera, but of course it was turned off at the time. This type of pervasive criminality can only be sustained when the entire corpus is rotten.
Nice piece tying together the “broken windows” style of crime suppression with the delegitimization of the police.
Personally, I think we’ve long passed the point of no return and stronger measures will be necessary to bring back any sense of legitimacy.
And this exemplifies why cameras on police will not change their behavior one iota. This was captured on film, a thugscrum of cops pile on a man while one of them chokes him to death, the medical examiner rules it a homicide…still, no charges will be filed. They are above the law and no amount of video footage–no matter how horrific–will change that. That is the world we live in.
With a headline like that one would think it is an article on The Onion…but no, you can’t make shit like this up.
Of course, the short answer is No.
