A little old, but still worth reading. Steven Pinker argues that new media is getting the same bad rap as old media in its day.

To this I would add that reading forces our brains to work in a linear fashion, it may in fact wire the brain to work that way at the expense of the more abstract (non-linear) natural thought. One could argue that new media is rolling back the changes that were wrought by the printing press.
